Seven reasons why Harry Potter is forever magical
"After all this time?" Those are the most important words when it comes to Severus Snape and the big twist in The Deathly Hallows. Deathly Hallows. But for us, they're also the perfect text introduction when it comes to this question: after all this time? Why is Harry Potter still relevant after all this time? And the answer here, as there, is: Always. The Boy Who Lived will always be important. We have compiled what we consider to be the seven most important reasons why the why the fascination with Harry Potter continues to this day.
1. a great, timeless story
Okay, the first point is mega obvious. Harry Potter would definitely not be a worldwide phenomenon if the story wasn't any good. would be no good. But it is! Even if Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone starts out rather small and can clearly be categorized as a - comparatively as a comparatively complex children's book, the story develops over the course of seven books and eight films. a story with many twists and surprises. With details in the first book that only make sense in the seventh volume. in the seventh volume. With thoughtful developments and dialogue that rings true. Above all, the story is classic as timeless: a boy with a hard childhood has to pass several difficult tests, and despite the most adverse circumstances, he keeps his good essence. The fact that the whole thing is also written in a damn entertaining way doesn't hurt either.
2. characters that inspire
The many characters are wonderfully written and bursting with personality. This is true not only for Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger (a.k.a. Shark Force Omega), but also for the other supporting characters such as Albus Dumbledore, Rubeus Hagrid, Sirius Black and Severus Snape. We root for all of these people. We want to know how what happens next. What decisions they'll make and how they'll play out. Whereby ... actually this also applies to the countless "minor" characters that J.K. Rowling has created. What would the story be without Luna Lovegood? Without Draco Malfoy, Minverva McGonagall, Remus Lupin, Bellatrix Lestrange, the Weasley twins, Professor Umbridge, Dobby, or Moaning Myrtle? Not to forget our likeable darling Gilderoy Lockhart, five-time winner of Witch Week's Most Charming Smile Award.
3. fascinating parallel world
At least as important as the characters is the magical world itself. There's so much going on, there are so many details details that it's impossible to grasp everything the first time you read (or watch) it. The most fascinating thing is the way it is integrated into our own world. It is a parallel world, so perfectly that we can imagine - or perhaps we only wish - that it actually exists. exists. And who wouldn't want to live in a world where the Room of Wishes exists. Or the mirror nerhegeb, the moving pictures in the Daily Prophet, the living portraits at Hogwarts, Quidditch, the Ministry of Magic, or just or simply the many magical animal creatures, from Fluffy to house elves to the dangerous as well as cute Nifflers. And all this stuff is not only cool, but well thought out. It follows clear rules that immediately make sense. make sense.
4. Harry Potter conveys good values
By this we mean we don't mean, or better: not exclusively the values represented by the four Hogwarts houses. Sure, courage is a great thing. So are cunning, diligence and intelligence. But Harry Potter conveys much much more than that - and quite naturally. It doesn't just claim that friendship, love and openness are good things. are good things. Instead, we experience together with the characters how they discover these values for themselves and how they perceive them. perceive them for themselves. For example, when the timid Neville Longbottom decides to stand in the way of his friends in Philosopher's Stone. his friends in The Philosopher's Stone. And in doing so, perhaps for the first time in his life, he lives out something like bravery. For which he for which he is rewarded with the house trophy in the end. And, of course, there are also countless wonderful quotes that quite obviously values: "It's not our abilities that show who we are, but our choices. choices."
5. the long presence of the main series
The first book was published in 1997, the last film in 2011. That's a whopping fourteen years in which Harry Potter has appeared again and again in the media. With such a long time to go, it's no wonder that fans keep stressing how important it is to them that they grew up with Harry and co. Grown up together with these characters. And it certainly didn't hurt that the movies lagged behind the books when they were released. On the one hand the filmmakers knew exactly how the story would end, how the final duel between Harry and Lord Voldemort would end. would end. And for another: The fans who first saw Harry Potter in the cinema were so gripped by the story that they were that they desperately wanted to know what would happen next. Without having to wait two years for the next film. for the next film. And that, of course, was only possible with the books.
6. the right time
There are always phenomena that became successful primarily because they appeared at the right time. Whether the Harry Potter books would have succeeded in inspiring an entire generation to read if they had been published just ten years earlier, we doubt it. And yes, it's also due to the Internet. Like the hit series Lost Harry Potter benefited immensely from the possibilities of the World Wide Web. On fan sites, in forums, podcasts and even with fan fictions, they exchanged ideas with other enthusiasts and added fuel to the fire of the Harry Potter hype train. further. While waiting for the next book, every little detail was analyzed and discussed to death. discussed. Were bets made on the possible death of important characters. There was speculation, speculated and spun around as if there was no tomorrow. All this created the fan base that made Harry Potter a worldwide success. worldwide success. As an aside, the then operator of the fan site The Leak Melissa Anelli, who ran the fan site The Leaky Cauldron, wrote her own book about the extent of this (online) fandom: Harry, A History.
7. it goes on
All of these were and are good reasons why Harry Potter is still relevant today. But Harry Potter will also be relevant in the future. in the future. And not only for the reasons mentioned above, but also simply because: It's not over! Before it became too quiet around the boy who survived, new content appeared on the scene in time. The play Harry Potter and the Enchanted Child, for example. The current film series Fantastic Beasts, which tells, what was going on in the magical world before Harry. And cleverly incorporates familiar elements that we didn't know much about before about, such as the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald. Plus, there are specials like the big reunion that will be which will run on HBO Max in January 2022 (and on Sky here in Germany), and the long-awaited Hogwarts Legacy video game. And so Harry Potter is now one of the few brands that inspires across ages and generations. Like Star Wars, James Bond and The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter will simply always play a role.
